  • Matte Watch is using July to begin a real celebration by sponsoring digital photo contests that are sure to help you find some hot new ways to use your digital photographs. Our series begins July 5-11, as we start our first weekly photo contest using the theme of scenic photographs. These contests are open to everyone from amateurs to professional digital photo enthusiasts, with details explained in each of our weekly contest postings.

For every week in July, we will pick out 3 top winners from among the weekly participants to be placed in the group of potential monthly winners. At the end of the month, we will award monthly prizes to three people from the list of weekly winners. These additional monthly prizes will be awarded without any extra entry requirements from weekly participants. If we do not have anyone participating in a weekly contest, chances for winning a monthly prize improve for subsequent weeks during July. Monthly level prizes include the following:

First Place Credit for 3 free digital photo treatments made from your own photographs. You can choose to apply your free credits toward a digital plaque, digital award, digitally matted photo, or a digital calendar page for a future month, or one of our own creations from our web site.

Second Place 2 free credits toward digital photo treatments, chosen from the product categories mentioned above.

Third Place 1 free credit toward a digital photo treatment from one of our product categories.

If there are no weekly contest participants, there will be no weekly or monthly prizes awarded. Monthly contest winners may choose to have prizes created from weekly entry photos, or provide new pictures for us to work with. All monthly winners will be notified by email, with their prizes awarded as credits toward their composition selections. Prize credits should be redeemed within 30 days of email notification. If prizes are not redeemed within the 30 day time limit, they will be forfeited and void. At our discretion, completed prize creations may be posted on our site.

With regular monthly participation in our contests, the top 3 winners of monthly prizes will be automatically entered in our yearly prize competition levels. Details of potential yearly contest prizes will be posted in an article describing our yearly contest rewards. If we do not have regular monthly winners, there will be no annual prizes awarded. Your digital treasures are just waiting to be discovered, so enter our contests for your chances to win.

  • Ever been disappointed in your digital landscape photography photos? Wonder why they don’t look as good as others that you have seen in books or magazines? Your not alone, most photographers are never happy with their own images. Not to mention the fact that you can’t rearrange a nature scene to your liking. Taking great landscaping shots doesn't have to be complicated if you plan a little.

Of course a nice breath taking view would be nice for starters, landscape photography is actually an art. Always be on the lookout for a great scene, what may just be “farm land” to someone, could actually be a winning photograph to others. Just as an example, I went to visit my Dad recently and he had this beautiful landscape scene photo that he had shot up on the Blueridge Parkway. I told him how really beautiful it was, it truly was a breath taking photo even though it was just of some farm land with bails of hay strewn about, a torn up roof on a barn, etc. Do you want to know what made the scene so beautiful? Season was the main key, my Dad took the photo during fall colors, the trees were beautiful. The seasonal colors of the trees and the time of day lighting was perfect. It was just an awesome photograph. I guess my point is that you must consider all variations, my Dad took me to the spot where he shot the photo in the middle of the summer and I didn’t even take a picture, it just wasn’t “breath taking” on a plain ole summer day.

Always consider weather, which may add to the beauty of a landscape scene. Consider storm clouds or white puffy clouds or even just a really beautiful deep blue sky. These are things to think about and be aware of as they can drastically alter the professionalism of your photographs. Night scenes may also be excellent, or sunset, or dawn, the natural lighting of the time a day can make all the difference from a boring shot to a photograph that will command a profit if sold.

When I was up on the Blueridge Parkway with my Dad, I began to notice textures, like old wood or even bails of hay, I took some very interesting pictures of hay and split rail fences and buildings with old grainy, gray wood. I think they are pretty awesome anyway. Even an old wooden window can make a great photograph if you compose it properly.

Nature photos are a favorite of many photographers and the most fun to shoot in my opinion. Especially, those breath taking landscape photographs.  At least you don’t have to make people smile, etc. One thing about nature, it don't have to "say cheese" to look pretty. Keep in mind the few tips I’ve given you here and your images will surely improve. Planning plays a big part, check out your scene at various times of day and keep an eye out for clouds, weather, tree colors, etc. I sincerely hope I have given you some great ideas and things to think about. Now go get shooting (camera shooting that is).
